The Venus Occultation: the Sun has a Beauty Spot

Presented by Nikki Worth

Saturday 19th May, 2-5pm

We’ve been looking up at the stars for a long time and Venus has played a prominent role due to her visual beauty and unique cycle. She is renowned for her rising and setting, her periods of invisibility and looping across the night sky and, ever so rarely, she traverses the face of the Sun.

This is a Venus Occultation.

We recently witnessed this rare event in June 2004—the previous one was in 1882. Prior to June 2004, no one alive had observed a Venus Occultation. They come in pairs 8 years apart, and the second one occurs in Melbourne on 6th June 2012. Now many of us will see it twice in a lifetime.

In today’s talk, we will explore this rare event and the potential significance it holds.
