Hearts of Darkness: the Astrology of Two Cult Leaders
presented by Charles Jameson
Jim Jones and Marshall Applewhite were born just a few days apart in May 1931. In adulthood, both gained infamy and notoriety as ‘cult leaders’. Both orchestrated mass suicides of their followers: Jones at Jonestown, Guyana, in 1978; Applewhite in California, in 1997. They stand as the largest mass suicides led by U.S. citizens on foreign soil (Jones) and domestically (Applewhite).
How did this come about? How and why did people (blindly?) commit their lives – and deaths – to these men? And given their similar birth data, what are the astrological similarities and differences between Jones and Applewhite?
This presentation is primarily an astrological investigation of Jim Jones. It looks at his natal chart and key life events. The secondary topic, Applewhite’s astrological journey, is less detailed due to less available data. In conclusion, Charles will look briefly at the notion of ‘evil’, and why some people incline towards criminal behaviour.
About the speaker
Charles has been studying astrology since 1993. He was taught privately by Kay Raymer, and qualified with an F.A.A. Diploma in the late 1990s. Since then, he’s completed Robert Zoller’s Foundation of Medieval Astrology, and John Frawley’s Horary Apprenticeship. He has also studied Four Pillars Chinese astrology and Feng Shui with Vic Ketis.
Charles co-founded the Regulus Astrology Conference, where he did two presentations: one on the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction cycle, the other on the astrological work of Nicholas Culpeper (1616-1654). He has previously presented to the V.A.A. on Elizabethan astrologer Simon Foreman (1552-1611).
His fledgling astrological blog is: astrologyschool.net
