2020 The Chinese Year of the Rat

Astrology, Feng Shui, and the Climate/Fire Crisis

presented by Vic Ketis

This will be a 2-part lecture.

Part 1 will examine the upcoming Chinese year, 2020 being the Year of the Metal Rat. The Chinese Zodiac is a cycle of 12 animal signs, with the Rat being the first animal of a 12-year cycle. It appears at the bottom of the cycle of animal signs where Yin changes to Yang.

2020 signifies an important year, according to the Chinese Astrological paradigm, where a new cycle is beginning. The previous year of the Rat was 2008. This was the time of the GFC and numerous changes of government including the end of Howard, Blair, Bush, Chirac, etc. – the end of an old order. The last few years have been the waning phase of the cycle where you may have experienced endings, which may have catalysed deeper psychological issues and transitions. The Rat signifies the transition between the old and the new, and the previous year of the Metal Rat was 1960, which ushered in the revolutionary 60’s. Currently, we are moving through a similar transition with the focus on environmental issues, amplified by climate change being at the forefront. We are also coming to the end of a Chinese 20-year cycle, as well as the governing 180-year cycle. I will make reference to these cycles in the lecture, because critical to the interpretation of a year is the consideration of the cycles in which it occurs.

As we know, 2020 ushers in numerous astrological influences, including the Saturn-Pluto conjunction, the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, significant eclipses etc.. How can these be viewed through a different lens?

Part 2 – As we are all aware, this year our country, and many other places in the world – the Amazon, North America, Central Africa and across Europe – are in a state of crisis due to bushfires decimating forests, landscapes, and ecologies.

In this part of the lecture I will draw upon some of the fundamental philosophies and principles of Feng Shui (FS) in ascertaining the essential components and configurations of a landscape considered ‘auspicious’ and ‘life enhancing’. Prosperity/wind chimes etc. are not spoken about in the classical FS material, but what is alluded to is ‘the right formations of landscapes, water, and vegetation that enhance, generate, give foundation to, and fortify life’. In essence, what are the optimal conditions that are required for a healthy and abundant life?

This information could contribute to the conditions and requirements essential in recovery and restoration that can be implemented after the fires to bring balance, wellbeing and fertility, and enable life to thrive. This will be correlated to the relevant planets and the current astrological cycles – the merging of a Feng Shui and Astrological narrative.
