Magic & Meaning in the Fixed Stars
presented by Roderick Kidston
This time ‘the asteroid guy’ is changing gears – it’s back to astrological basics, to the magic and meaning found in the major stars of the constellations themselves.
The original stargazers worked with more than just the visible planets and the zodiac band, but few astrologers nowadays get to grips with the actual stars themselves. The revival of classical and medieval techniques seems to have ignored what would have been bread and salt astrology to Ptolemy, and even the writings of William Lilly reference stars like Regulus and Spica or dread Algol.
So this afternoon we shall play with stars and look anew at the deep archetypal meaning they reveal. There are hundreds potentially to learn, which might say something about why they’re mostly ignored – too much complexity yet again. Yet understanding some essential elements of some major stars opens up the horoscope like a distant nebula in a telescope, and deepens anything we can say about the interplay of planets and asteroids. Whether the stars are good or bad or ugly or glorious they add vast power to the chart, and it is enriching and empowering to know how to start reading them.
About the Speaker
Roderick was an early fan of adding asteroids to the astrologer’s repertoire, and now finds it impossible to read a horoscope fully without the so-called ‘minor planets’. The study of harmonics has also been a passion, and he is interested in a more integral approach to astrology that links with developments in depth and transpersonal psychology, metaphysics and the new physics. This includes the new insights offered by the spiral dynamics theory of the evolution of consciousness.
Roderick has published on astrology in several places over the years, taught it, given talks and workshops in several cities, and he has spoken at several conferences since 2003. He spoke most recently at the 2014 FAA Conference in Hobart on astrology and the evolution of consciousness.
